How to beat marapets
Marapets is the second largest virtual pet site (next to Neopets) and if you’re looking for a way to beat Marapets you’ll have to surpass them with content, features, items, and more. Marapets currently ranks on google.com for the keyword “games” and they’re ranked #5, however; that didn’t come easy for them because they opened up an advertising budget and made sure they would rank for that keyword.

So, we believe there are a few things a virtual pet site owner can do if they want to surpass Marapets in the member count and active users count and we believe if you open up with a ton of content - at least 25 flash games, 50 virtual pets, 10 quests, 5 freebie games, and a wide variety of lands that include a different theme - make one include space, however; if you can’t do that, then just have a text-based site if you don’t have any artists. Subeta and Creature World have succeeded in having worlds with a lot of text, but one day they’ll most likely have explore maps - where you can click on an image and it’ll take you the place.

If you plan to beat Marapets, then make sure to have the following done on your pet site games that include quest games, php-based games, timed-games, and various things to do. Your pet site won’t be striving until everyone hears about it and if you open up big with a lot of things to do, then you should be fine. We believe anyone can beat Marapets if they put they minds do it, however; it won’t come easy. You’ll have to optimize all your pages for the search engines like Marapets has and open up various pages so that the spiders can crawl your content and index them so that when a user searches for a certain keyword on google or the other search engines, then your virtual pet site will come up first.

If you don’t know how Marapets grew so fast, then we’ll give you a quick history brief. Marapets used to be Maraqua which was one of the largest neopets fansites back in 2003 - 2004, however; once Neopets found out about maraqua because it was breaking one of the copyright laws; Ian and Laimay decided to open up marapets to shock everyone. Ian & Laimay have succeeded in that and we believe Marapets was first created as a test to see if they could beat Neopets, however; they have succeeded in attracting neopets players by advertising via adwords - and when Neopets went down a week or two ago; Marapets showed up on the “sponsored links” section when you searched for Neopets on google. We believe if Maraqua wasn’t created as a neopets fansite, then Marapets probably wouldn’t be as successful as it is today.

Also one quick tip we’d love to share with our viewers is that if your pet site starts to receive a ton of exposure, then you better be prepared for Mara to copy your features’ idea. They created the tombola feature because Neopets had it and a few other ideas were inspired or taken from Neopets. We believe they did it on purpose to attract Neo’s fanbase, however; we could be wrong but if they continue to grow as they are, then they’ll be very hard to surpass.

It’s not hard to beat Marapets, but you better be prepared for some competition. Just be a better optimizer for the search engines and see if you can surpass Marapets for the highly searched keywords. First of all, try ranking for virtual pets, virtual pet, pets and then if you can rank #1 for those keywords, then try to rank for “games” and put Marapets out of business.

We hope this article helps you succeed on trying to beat marapets.

  1. They opened up with a lot of Flash games and such because a good portion of their content was stolen. According to YamiPoli.com:

“They are notorious thieves. All of their flash games are stolen. They used a flash cracker or Flash editor to take other people’s work and add in a scoring system. Some of the games even still have the link to the flash editor they used, so users can just click that and download the program and find out how they are sending the score. One of the wanna-be artist stole some of another pet site’s (Jinopets), but this has been resolved so far. Among the stolen games are Smack the Pingu, Toss the Pingu, Zookeeper (with the japanese text still on it, even), and several, several others. They have a total of 31 games. 31 games + 91 day old site = impossible to be made by them, or even modified free games…”

While the review was made 3 months after Marapets was started, it’s no wonder they became so big after awhile.

  2. The games they opened with were indeed downloaded/modified games from other websites.
